Testers found the top tube on our medium test bike to be on the lighter side of the spectrum. It is by no means debilitating and the 442mm reach number seems about average for a medium frame. That said, all three testers stated that the bike felt short. This bike offers a firm and ultra-efficient pedal platform that has plenty of pep. This bike crawls up technical climbs very effectively, but we wouldn’t necessarily call the 429 comfortable over rocks and roots. The geometry is spot-on despite a slightly cramped top tube.

Due to a continuous gaining of time in the first leg, by arrival at Grantham, Tornado was 6 minutes ahead of schedule.

Three professional mountain bike testers spent ten days riding this new bike as much as humanly possible. The Trail 429 is a great bike for those who like a sporty short-travel bike with tight handling and tremendous climbing abilities. This bike is best riding terrain with intermittent technical features. It carves and slashes its way down singletrack with impressive composure. The 429 can navigate boney and technical terrain, but it requires some finesse and a good bit of precision. Climbing abilities are very impressive and we don’t hesitate to call this bike one of the best climbers we have ridden.
However, I don’t think most Trail riders need more than 120mm of travel. If all you need is 120mm of travel, why ride a heavy bike. I want the lightest reasonable bike for a given price point. I want 2.4-2.6 durable grippy tires that are fast-rolling and light-weight. I want modern progressive middle-of-the-road Trialbike geometry which finds a balance between XC geo and Enduro geo. Which leaves only travel, which is probably less than you think as I described above.

It’s no cross-country racer, but it pedals well and the 141 is barely lighter. If you were to run 26% sag on a 161 and 30% sag on a 141, both will have 42mm of sag. And barring any significant differences in the leverage curve or the shock, that would mean they’d have the same spring rate. You could add volume spacers to the 161 to get it to feel almost identical. You may never use all the 161’s travel when set up like this, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing – you could just think of Bike vs. Train the last 10-20mm of travel as « for emergencies only ».
